After getting the better of Tottenham last month, things were beginning to look particularly rosy for Burnley. That win at Turf Moor, saw them extend their unbeaten league run to eight games and put some clear daylight between themselves and the bottom three.
Fast forward to early March and the picture has turned gloomy. Three straight league defeats mean, that the Clarets start the weekend lying 18th in the Premier League table and looking nervously over their shoulder once again.
This weekend they play host to a Leicester side that finally got off the mark under Brendan Rodgers last Saturday, with the Foxes being too strong for a Fulham side that looked all but destined for a quick return to the EFL Championship.
While later that same weekend, Burnley had to travel to Anfield and face a Liverpool side who knew that nothing less than a win would do, in order to stay firmly on the coattails of current Premier League leaders Manchester City.
If it was meant to be a relatively comfortable Liverpool victory last Sunday, Burnley must have only read the first draft of the script and after just six minutes, they found themselves opening the scoring.
A speculative Ashley Westwood corner ended up nestling in the goal and although on closer inspection, it looked as if Liverpool’s Alisson Becker had been impeded in trying to collect the ball – the goal stood.
Unfortunately for the visitors it was a goal that sparked the hosts into life and after taking such umbrage from going behind to a dubious effort, they then went up through the gears to eventually wrap up all three points.
Sean Dyche will at least be pleased that his side managed to score twice at one of the toughest grounds in the division, although he will certainly be less pleased that his players shipped twice as many at the same ground.
He will have to hope that the defensive lapses don’t rear their ugly head once again come Saturday as Jamie Vardy is once again sniffing goals from Leicester, something that shows you just need to play to his full strengths, to then get the best out of the former England international.
Vardy was instrumental in Leicester City’s win over Fulham last weekend and with that, the East Midlands outfit are still in with an outside chance of entering the race to finish ‘the best of the rest’ and subsequently end the campaign in 7th.
That win over Fulham, means that Brendan Rodgers is not left with a series of dead rubbers between now and the end of the season, while the hope is that his new charges can find a decent run of form in these last eight fixtures.
In addition to that, those eight fixtures will allow Rodgers the perfect opportunity in which to see which players he will want to keep in the off-season and which he will let walk through the King Power exit door.
Burnley certainly need to return to winning ways, while Leicester arguably have the greater sign of life at present. It could well be that this goes either way and with that in mind, both teams to score is a good suggestion for any weekend bet on this clash.
