Brentford finished the 2023-24 Premier League season in 16th place, 13 points above the relegation zone. Despite their lowly finish, Brentford collected enough points (39) for smooth survival in the end.

The Bees struggled for large parts of the season, partly due to Ivan Toney’s suspension during the first half of the season.

Once Toney returned, he only managed to score four goals in 17 appearances. With Toney struggling to score, Yoane Wissa tallied 12 goals to finish the season as Brentford’s leading goal scorer. He Wisse was also the only Brentford player in double digits.

Knowing they needed more goals, Brentford’s front office went to work and signed a striker for the upcoming 2024-25 season.

Brentford signed striker Igor Thiago from Belgium’s Club Brugge this offseason to ease the goal scoring burden on Toney and Wissa.

Thiago signed for €33 million on a five-year contract. The 23-year-old Brazilian could now set the Premier League on fire and continue his rise in football.

The striker scored 29 goals in 55 matches in all competitions last season for Club Brugge. His goal scoring, 18 goals in 34 league matches, helped Club Brugge win the Belgian Pro League. He managed an 18-goal haul despite missing three of the last four matches of the campaign.

Sixteen of Thiago’s goals were scored during the Pro League’s regular season. Those 16 goals were scored from 51 shots. He averaged 2.5 shots per 90 minutes.

Thiago was just signed to provide Brentford with goals, he may have been added to replace Toney. Toney is in the final 12 months of his Brentford contract.

Several teams have been linked with signing Toney. However, there is no evidence that Toney will leave the club this summer and may instead depart Brentford in 12 months on a free transfer.

Brentford scored 56 goals in the Premier League. It was the 10th-most goals scored in the Premier League.

Brentford’s defence conceded the league’s sixth-most goals (65). Although the defence struggled, the Bees have so far focused on adding to the attack.

Thiago is Brentford’s only signing thus far. The Brazilian played just one season at Club Brugge after moving to the Belgian side from Bulgaria’s Ludogorets.

The Brazilian striker isn’t one of the typical mercurial Brazilians. Rather, much like fellow Brazilian Hulk, he is a player that has fought his way into top-level football.

Thiago started his career at 18 with Cruzeiro in Brazil’s Serie B before landing in Bulgaria. Now, Thiago is on the cusps of becoming Brentford’s top-choice in attack.
