Forebet’s pre-tournament algorithm accurately anticipated several key developments in the group stage of the 2025 Club World Cup. Now that the group phase has concluded and the knockout matchups are set, it’s clear where the model delivered strong results – and where it missed the mark.

European dominance, but Brazilian depth shines

The algorithm correctly projected that Europe would dominate across most groups, with teams like Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Juventus all topping their groups. However, the standout overperformance came from Brazil. All four Brazilian clubs – Palmeiras, Flamengo, Fluminense, and Botafogo – advanced to the Round of 16. The model had predicted strong showings for Palmeiras and Flamengo, but underestimated Botafogo, forecasting them to finish third in Group B behind Atlético Madrid and PSG.

Group scenarios and near hits

Palmeiras winning Group A and progressing was in line with predictions, although Inter Miami, who were expected to finish third, managed to advance after drawing all three of their group games. In Group D, the model predicted Chelsea to top the group and Flamengo to finish second, which matched the final standings. The tight finishes in Groups C and F were also well anticipated, where the predicted teams to advance – Bayern Munich, Benfica, Dortmund, and Fluminense – ultimately did.

Missed calls and surprises

One of the more notable deviations was Botafogo. Contrary to predictions, the Brazilian side outperformed expectations and finished second in a difficult group, pushing out Atlético Madrid. Similarly, Inter Miami progressed where Porto, predicted second in Group A, fell short. These outcomes suggest the algorithm may require refinement in modeling team form during international tournaments, especially for clubs from outside Europe.

European powerhouses deliver

Where the model shined was in evaluating the consistency and dominance of Europe’s elite. Manchester City topped Group G with a commanding win over Juventus, and Real Madrid finished Group H unbeaten and without conceding a goal. Bayern Munich also advanced cleanly, as predicted, confirming the model’s strength in assessing team depth, tactical quality, and recent form.

Knockout stage expectations

The algorithm points to tight, high-stakes matchups in the Round of 16. Palmeiras and Botafogo will meet in an all-Brazilian clash – a fixture the model hadn’t originally projected due to Botafogo’s expected group-stage exit. Flamengo face Bayern Munich in what could be one of the most intense matchups of the round. Meanwhile, Fluminense take on Inter Milan in a battle of form versus structure.

Other notable fixtures include PSG vs. Inter Miami and Chelsea vs. Benfica – both of which could go either way, depending on tactical execution and momentum. Manchester City and Real Madrid remain among the algorithm’s top contenders, and their paths could cross again deeper into the tournament.

Looking forward

The model performed well in predicting group-stage progression for many top teams and will benefit from enhancements that better account for mid-season sharpness and underdog momentum. Brazilian clubs in particular proved that current form and domestic rhythm can outweigh pre-tournament expectations.
