    Wolves were the Premier League’s surprise package last season.

    The club was competing in the Premier League for the first time since 2012 and exceeded all expectations.

    Can Wolves build on their successful 2018/19 campaign, or will there be a case of “second season syndrome” at Molineux?

    Last season

    Following their promotion from the Championship, Nuno Espirito Santo guided the club to a seventh-place finish.

    This was Wolves’ highest league position since 1980 and the team also reached their first FA Cup semi-final in 21 years.

    The team had standout performers in every position last season. Raul Jimenez finished as the club’s top goal scorer with 17 goals while Conor Coady played every minute of every match.

    Diogo Jota, Ruben Neves and Rui Patricio are just a few more names that also had excellent seasons and all of them will be hoping to carry their impressive form over into the new campaign.

    Next season

    Juggling the Premier League with European football is the challenge that Nuno Espirito Santo’s faces next season.

    If the club make it through the qualifying rounds, they will have to play regular midweek fixtures that could hinder their chances of another top-half finish.

    We saw it happen to Burnley last season. Following a fantastic domestic season, they had to endure a difficult European qualification run that ultimately had a negative impact on their Premier League campaign.

    With that being said, Wolves do possess a much stronger squad than Burnley and this could work in their favor.

    Raul Jimenez and Leander Dendoncker both enjoyed fantastic first seasons with Wolves and the club has done well to secure both players on permanent deals.

    The club doesn’t need to change too much in order to progress and it looks as though both the manager and the board have acknowledged this.

    There have been no major changes to the squad and this is a reflection of how much the team achieved last season and also how much faith the manager has in his players.
