Can Colombia continue their brilliant Copa America ‘24 form in the quarterfinals versus Panama?

Colombia topped Copa America Group D, with a brilliant seven points from nine on offer and six goals scored.

Will our algorithm predict a win for the Cafeteros in their quarterfinal showdown with Panama?

Colombia will play Panama on Saturday in Glendale, Arizona, with a place in the semifinals on the line. The winner of the tie between the two clubs will face off with either Uruguay or Brazil in the final four.

Panama finished the group stage in second place in Group C. The Canal Men shocked the CONCACAF region by ending the group stage with six points, knocking out the highly-favoured USA team in the process.

Head coach Thomas Christiansen watched the team defeat the USA 2-1 after coming from behind. Panama then defeated Bolivia 3-1 to punch their ticket for the quarterfinals. Their only blemish was a 3-1 loss to Uruguay to open the group stage.

Colombia, on the other hand, defeated Paraguay 2-1 before cruising to a 3-0 victory over Costa Rica. In their final group stage game, Colombia came from behind to draw 1-1 with Brazil.

James Rodriguez has turned back the clock for Colombia in the Copa America. The former Real Madrid playmaker, now 32 and playing for Brazil’s Sao Paulo, has been Colombia’s player of the tournament so far.

Although Rodriguez has not scored a goal, he has pulled the strings for Colombia. Meanwhile, Crystal Palace wing-back Daniel Munoz has scored two goals for the Cafeteros, which is joint-second in the tournament.

Panama’s Jose Fajardo leads the team in scoring with two goals. Fajardo plays club football for Universidad Catolica in Ecuador. The 30-year-old could lead the Canal Men to an unlikely semifinal appearance in the Copa.

Colombia are heavy favourites ahead of the match, according to bookmakers. Since 2005, these teams have played a total of four times, with them splitting the wins two apiece. Colombia outscored Panama in the four meetings 9-4.

The last time these national sides played was in 2019 in a friendly. Colombia came out on top with a 3-0 victory.

Despite being unfancied against Brazil, Colombia outshot the Brazilians 13-7, with six shots hitting the target. Our algorithm predicts another offensive onslaught from Colombia, with the match ending 3-0 in their favour.

Colombia won the Copa America in 2001 for the first and only time. They are currently fourth favourites to lift the Copa this year.

Our score prediction is for a 3-0 win over Panama. It could lead to another appearance in the final.
