The Highest-Scoring Football Matches in World Cup History

As the final weekend of the 2026 FIFA World Cup drew closer, we were all expecting a blockbuster of a football final between Spain and Argentina, and a likely boring, dispirited, and unmotivated 3rd-place match between France and England. And boy were we wrong about the latter, as instead, we got one of the highest-scoring football matches in World Cup history!

Not only that, but we also got one of the most highly-competitive and tight matches too, with a 4-6 result and not a one-sided 10-1 thrashing or something of the sort. Even though both teams were bemoaning having to play in a “meaningless” bronze final match and claiming that “the 3rd-place match shouldn’t be a thing at the World Cup,” they ended up giving us a game for the history books!

But was that 10-goal thriller the highest-scoring football match in World Cup history? Well, not quite, as we can think of a few games at the biggest stage of world football that gave us even more goals. It was close, however, so we thought we’d go through history and update the list of the 5 highest-scoring football matches in World Cup history with its new 2026 inclusion.

1st) Austria 7-5 Switzerland (1954)

• Austria goals: Theodor Wagner (25, 27, 53), Alfred Korner (26, 34), Ernst Ocwirk (32), Erich Probst (76)

This quarter-final match in Switzerland remains the highest-scoring game in World Cup history. Played in extreme heat that reached 40 degrees Celsius (104°F), the tournament hosts shocked Austria by racing into a three-goal lead within the first twenty minutes. However, the Austrian team launched an immediate and historic comeback, scoring five goals before the half-time whistle blew. The second half saw no defensive adjustments, as the two sides kept trading goals in the blistering sun. Strikers Theodor Wagner and Josef Hügi both netted brilliant hat-tricks, but Austria held on to win an absolute classic.

2nd) Hungary 8-3 West Germany (1954)

The legendary Hungarian team of the 1950s, known as the "Magical Magyars," was almost unstoppable in the group stage of the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland. Led by the iconic Ferenc Puskás, Hungary completely dismantled the West German defense with their revolutionary passing style. The Germans chose to rest several key players for this group stage game, which allowed Hungary to easily run riot and score eight goals. Sándor Kocsis scored four times during this dominant display. While this heavy defeat embarrassed West Germany, it famously motivated them to beat Hungary in a massive 3-2 upset later in the final.

3rd) Hungary 10-1 El Salvador (1982)

This group stage match in Spain created World Cup history as the first and only time a team scored double-digit goals in a single game. El Salvador entered the tournament with great hope but chose a very risky, attacking strategy that left huge spaces open at the back. Hungary punished their naive opponents mercilessly from the start. Substitute forward László Kiss made history by scoring the fastest hat-trick in the tournament's history, striking three times in just seven minutes. Although El Salvador celebrated a single consolation goal, they could not stop Hungary's record-setting attack.

4th) France 4-6 England (2026)

Played in Miami, USA, the France vs England 3rd-place final of the 2026 World Cup was shown late in the evening in Europe, for some going well past midnight. With both sides hugely disappointed about missing the final after losses to Spain and Argentina respectively, many players from either team had hinted in interviews that they are not motivated for the match at all. France’s manager Didier Deschamps said it plainly in an interview before the match: 'The English team doesn't want to play, we do not either.'

This got many of us to expect a boring low-scoring ‘pro forma’ game, with many fans in Europe opting for a good night’s sleep rather than staying up late to watch it. Yet, while Forebet's algorithm had predicted the BTTS and the Over 2.5 scoreline, no one could have reasonably expected the 10-goal thriller we were treated to.

And did those that went to sleep early miss out on one heck of a show! England flew into the game first, scoring a barrage of 4 goals in the first half, courtesy of Declan Rice, Ezri Konsa, and Bukayo Saka, ending the half-time with a stunning 0-4 scoreline.

This gave the French team the wake-up jolt they needed and Kylian Mbappé almost led Les Bleus to a come-back in the second half, but additional goals from Saka and Bellignham sealed the 4-6 final result.

5th) France 7-3 Paraguay (1958)

France began their 1958 World Cup campaign in Sweden with a phenomenal display of attacking power. Paraguay actually started well, surprising the French team by taking an unexpected early lead and keeping the score tied at three goals each early in the second half. However, France completely took control of the match in the final thirty minutes. Just Fontaine, who eventually set an all-time tournament record with thirteen goals, scored a brilliant hat-trick. Backed by creative playmaker Raymond Kopa, the relentless French attack completely overwhelmed the Paraguayan defense to win comfortably.

44 Years Since the Last Such High-Scoring Football Match in World Cup History

Even thinking of such high-scoring games at a FIFA World Cup can be a bit mind-boggling, as these are results we’re usually used to seeing in amateur football. And, indeed, it had been 44 years since the last such result, back when Hungary thrashed El Salvador 10-1 in 1982.

Instead, in the last couple of decades, in particular, we got used to the World Cup offering us tightly-played competitive games between highly-professional sides that just don’t let things get out of hand as dramatically as this.

The fact that this wasn’t a one-sided clobbering like the 7-1 Germany delivered to Curaçao earlier in the tournament makes the France vs England match even more special. And, yes, there are some honorable mentions we can add to this list too, including 6-5 Brazil vs Poland match in 1938 (not included here because it went beyond FT and into AET), the 6-3 of Argentina vs Mexico in 1930, the 9-0 of Hungary vs Korea Republic in 1954, the similar 9-0 of Yugoslavia vs Zaire in 1974, and more.

However, if we thought such results belong in the past (or just in the Group Stage), we were clearly wrong, as France and England just gave us one of the highest-scoring football match in World Cup history – and they didn’t even want to play it in the first place!
