FC Winterthur Aim to Extend Dominance Over Grasshoppers at the Schützenwiese
    11/03/2025 815

There is plenty on the line as FC Winterthur and Grasshoppers meet at the Stadion Schützenwiese in a clash between two sides keen to climb away from the lower reaches of the Super League table. With both teams sharing a run of challenging results but history tilting in Winterthur’s favor on home soil, there is extra significance layered on this match.

FC Winterthur have had little trouble dispatching Grasshoppers when hosting them recently. Across their last three home encounters in all competitions, Winterthur have emerged victorious every time, a sequence that surely boosts confidence ahead of this renewal. Indeed, across the last six home meetings, Winterthur have managed to win five, with three of those victories secured by a margin of at least two goals.

Winterthur’s overall campaign, however, has been far from straightforward. After 12 games of the regular season they sit 12th in the standings, with only a single victory and three draws, while suffering eight defeats. Their offensive output stands at 16 goals (averaging 1.33 per game), but an alarming 35 conceded (2.92 per game) tells the story of a frail defense.

More recently, Patrick Rahmen’s men have struggled to turn performances into wins. They have been winless in 80% of their last 10 matches in all competitions, and within the league, they have not won in 13 of their last 15 outings. Home form provides little comfort, with just one victory and one draw in the last three at Schützenwiese, balanced against a defeat, conceding nearly as many as they score (2.67 for and against on average).

Grasshoppers travel to Winterthur also with form to remedy. They have only secured one win in their last six, drawing once and losing the other four, and have gone winless in 83% of their last six matches overall. On the league front, Gerald Scheiblehner’s team occupy 11th place, just above Saturday’s opponents, managing two wins, four draws, and six losses, scoring 17 and conceding 27 in the process.

Grasshoppers' away record raises alarms as well – winless in 15 of their last 18 road games in all competitions (83%), and defeated eight times in their last 12 away matches. Recent data shows even starker away struggles: their last three away league matches have ended in defeat, with a meager 0.33 goals scored and a hefty 4.33 conceded per game.

When these two sides meet, however, goals are rarely in short supply, and both should find encouragement knowing defensive errors have been a common thread. The algorithm suggests a high-scoring affair, forecasting over 2.5 goals, with a likely outcome featuring five goals in total and Winterthur given a 42% probability to claim victory, most likely by 3-2.

Sidelined players will influence team selection for both managers. Winterthur will have to cope without Fabian Rohner and Loïc Lüthi, while Grasshoppers are missing Amir Abrashi due to injury. Assessing recent lineups and absentees, the probable starting elevens should be as follows:

    FC Winterthur

    Goalkeeper: Stefanos Kapino

Defenders: Silvan Sidler, Marvin Martins, Adrian Durrer, Souleymane Diaby

Midfielders: Randy Schneider, Alexandre Jankewitz, Luca Zuffi, Nishan Burkart

    Attackers: Andrin Hunziker, Pajtim Kasami

    Grasshoppers

    Goalkeeper: Justin Hammel

Defenders: Dirk Abels, Dorian Paloschi, Allan Arigoni

Midfielders: Samuel Marques, Lovro Zvonarek, Matteo Mantini, Simone Stroscio

Attackers: Óscar Clemente, Nikolas Muci, Jonathan Asp Jensen

With both teams grappling with defensive issues and struggling for consistent results, there is an air of unpredictability about the proceedings, but the historical edge at home gives FC Winterthur an advantage. Grasshoppers will need to show marked improvement if they are to break their away blues and end a tough run at Schützenwiese.

Given the trend of high-scoring affairs and recent head-to-head dominance, this looks set to be another open contest with Winterthur holding a slight edge in the outcome.
