    As Real Madrid and Barcelona prepare for the first El Clásico showdown of the season, we take a deep dive into the history of the iconic fixture ahead of Sunday’s clash.

    Sunday’s game will be the 250th competitive meeting between the two rivals – and the 284th meeting including exhibition matches since 1902. Interestingly, the overall head-to-head record is extremely close.

    Real Madrid have the slight upper hand, having won 100 of the 249 competitive meetings. Barcelona have claimed 97 victories over the years, while the other 52 clashes ended in a draw.

    The goal statistics are tight, too. Los Blancos have scored 415 across all competitions, while Barca have netted 408.

    The biggest winning margin in El Clásico history came back in 1943, when Real Madrid won 11-1 in the Copa del Rey. The biggest winning margin in La Liga since the turn of the century belongs to Barca, who won 5-0 in 2010.

    Of course, this famous fixture has seen countless legendary players take to the field. Lionel Messi is the top goalscorer in El Clásico history with 26 goals, while Cristiano Ronaldo and Alfredo Di Stefano have both scored 18.

    Messi also shares the all-time appearance record with Sergio Ramos, having featured in 45 El Clásico showdowns over the years.

    Looking at the recent head-to-head record, Barcelona have only managed to win one of their last seven competitive meetings with Real Madrid. Meanwhile, Los Blancos have won four of the previous five La Liga clashes.

    Still, it is important to remember that Xavi’s side thrashed Carlo Ancelotti’s team 4-0 at the Bernabeu when the teams last met back in March.

    With Real Madrid and Barcelona tied on 22 points at the La Liga summit, the 250th competitive meeting between the old foes is destined to be a thriller. After all, El Clásico always dishes up drama.
